College Highlight of the Week – The University of West Georgia

The University of West Georgia in Carrollton, about 45 miles west of Atlanta, was founded in 1906. The University’s mission is to achieve preeminence in providing educational excellence in a personal environment through an intellectually stimulating and supportive community for its students, faculty and staff. There are currently 10,029 Undergraduate students and more than 1100 faculty and staff members. The University of West Georgia was named by The Princeton Review as one of the “Best Southeastern Colleges” and one of “America’s Best Value Colleges.”

UWG is home to the state’s only Honors College, complete with honors curriculum. They also offer 55 programs at the Bachelor’s level and 150 student organizations. Students have a great deal of support if they need it, through first year programs, a writing and math center, advising and tutoring from the Excel Centers, a Counseling and Career Development Support and career search services. The five most popular majors are Business Development, Education, Health Services, Social Sciences and Psychology.

The campus at The University of West Georgia consists of 645 acres. The city of Carrollton, with a population of 20,000, is known as a “progressive city with a southern flavor.” It offers shopping, several restaurants and several cultural and entertainment venues. It was named “A City of Excellence in Georgia” and “One of the 50 Best Small Southern Towns.” Students can enjoy the county’s 33,421 acres of recreational parks.

The acceptance rate at UWG is 54.8 percent. When applying, it’s important to note the application deadline is June 1. Scores for either the ACT or SAT test are due June 1. The application fee at University of West Georgia is $30. To visit the admissions website, click here.
