December Reminders for 2025 Class

As the first semester of your senior year wraps up, staying organized and proactive is essential. December is a pivotal month for financial planning, college applications, and preparing for what’s ahead. With FAFSA officially opening this year, take the time to gather necessary documents, such as your parents’ 2023 tax returns, and create your FSA ID. While at it, start researching national and local scholarships, like the Coca-Cola Scholars or Jack Kent Cooke Foundation opportunities, to start the scholarship search.

Confirm that your submissions are complete if you have submitted college applications for schools with rolling or early deadlines. Double-check application portals to ensure all required materials—including transcripts and letters of recommendation—have been received. In addition, some of your schools might need Mid-Year Transcripts. Please check with all your colleges and request this item from your high school guidance counselor if necessary.

Stay mindful of upcoming regular decision deadlines in January or February, and use December to polish essays and review additional requirements, such as interviews or mid-year reports. If you were deferred from a University, be sure to work on any continued letter of interest, additional recommendation letters, or any information that they may have requested from you. These items may be due on January 1st. Take advantage of this opportunity to share why they are of interest for your college years.

Academics should remain a priority as mid-terms approach. Study smart by focusing on high-priority subjects and seeking help from teachers or peers for challenging topics. Keep an eye on your grades, address any dips by speaking with teachers about extra credit opportunities, and request letters of recommendation from teachers who know you well. Building a strong rapport now can help ensure personalized and impactful recommendations.

Take time to review your extracurricular involvement and leadership roles. Evaluate which activities bring you the most value and consider stepping into leadership positions for the upcoming year. Update your resume with accomplishments, awards, and hours logged in clubs, volunteering, or work. Additionally, start planning for summer internships, volunteer work, or programs that align with your career interests.

December is also a great time for college research and visits. Use the winter break to schedule tours, especially for local schools or those hosting open houses. Work on finalizing your f college list to ensure they align with your goals and preferences.

Amid all the planning, don’t forget about self-care and reflection. Balance your studies with hobbies and relaxation to manage stress effectively. Reflect on your accomplishments this year and set goals for the next semester. Celebrate your milestones and acknowledge the hard work you’ve put in so far. Taking these steps in December will set the tone for a successful spring semester and help you feel more confident as you move forward. Remember, this journey is about progress, not perfection.
