Reflect: Learning from the Past to Shape the Future

Wendy Williams

Class of 2026, Junior year is a critical time in the college preparation journey. With college applications just around the corner, this year is about taking concrete steps toward your future while making the most of high school, and great news, Williams Educational Consultants. Here's a guide on how to effectively reflect, plan, and take action during junior year:

Review Your Academic Progress

Take an honest look at your first- and second-year grades. What subjects have you excelled in? Where have you struggled? Use this reflection to make informed decisions about the classes you'll take in your junior and senior years. Now is the time to focus on areas that need improvement.

Reflect on Your Extracurricular Involvement

Evaluate your club participation, sports, volunteer work, or part-time jobs. Consider where you've shown leadership, your passions, and activities you genuinely enjoy. Focus on quality over quantity by narrowing down to a few core activities that align with your interests.

Consider Your Career and Academic Interests

By junior year, you may have a clearer sense of your passion. Reflect on what subjects you love, what you want to explore further, and how these interests could translate into college majors or career paths. If you're still unsure, that's okay—this year is perfect for exploring and refining your interests.

Take Stock of Your Mental and Emotional Well-being

Junior year can be demanding, so reflecting on your mental health is essential. Are you feeling overwhelmed or stressed? Do you have healthy habits in place to manage the pressure? Consider incorporating self-care practices, like exercise, mindfulness, or hobbies, into your routine to maintain balance.

Prepare for Spring Testing

This is a great time to demonstrate your academic strengths and make your college applications stand out. Prepare by setting a study schedule, taking practice tests, and focusing on areas where you can improve. Use your spring scores to fine-tune your college list and determine if any tests need to be retaken in the fall. Remember, preparation and organization are key to achieving your best results during this important testing season! If testing is not your jam, be sure to look at colleges on the FAIRTEST website.
