Reminders for High School Seniors: Stay on Track!

Wendy Williams

Your upcoming semester is crucial for your application process. It’s time to finish applications, manage school commitments, and start considering your college transition. Here are some key reminders to help you stay organized:

Submit Any Final College Applications

  • Double-Check Deadlines: Many Regular Decision and priority application deadlines fall in January. Confirm all dates and submit applications on time.

  • Review Your Materials: Make sure essays are polished and that recommendation letters, transcripts, and test scores have been sent.

Follow Up with Your School Counselor: Ensure all documents are submitted and confirm your application status.

Complete Financial Aid Forms

  • Submit the FAFSA: If you haven’t already done so, fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for federal aid.

  • Complete the CSS Profile: If required by your colleges, submit the CSS Profile for institutional aid.

  • Gather Documents: Make sure you have tax returns and other financial information handy for financial aid applications.

Keep Your Grades Up

  • Stay Focused: First-semester grades are essential—colleges may request mid-year reports to review your academic progress.

  • Avoid Senioritis: It’s tempting to relax, but stay dedicated to your coursework to maintain strong grades.

Apply for Scholarships

  • Search for New Opportunities: January is a great time to explore scholarship options with upcoming deadlines.

  • Complete Applications: Prioritize applications for local, national, and school-based scholarships.

Prepare for Midterms and AP Classes

  • Study for Midterms: If you have midterms, create a schedule to review key topics.

  • Get Ahead on AP Work: Start thinking about AP exams in the spring by organizing notes and considering review resources.

Stay Organized with a Calendar

  • Track Deadlines: Use a planner or digital calendar to mark important application deadlines, financial aid, and scholarships.

  • Create a To-Do List: Break down tasks into manageable steps so nothing falls through the cracks.

Plan Campus Visits (if needed)

  • Schedule Visits: If you’re still deciding on colleges, plan any final campus visits—virtually or in person.

  • Attend Accepted Student Events: If you’ve already received acceptances, sign up for information sessions to get a deeper sense of the school.

Take Care of Yourself

  • Manage Stress: January can be overwhelming, so remember to prioritize self-care and take breaks when needed.

  • Stay Connected: Lean on family, friends, and mentors for support as you navigate the final months of high school.

  • By staying organized and proactive this semester, you’ll set yourself up for a smooth and successful end to your senior year!
